Fuji Apple, Red Grape, Cocoa

Chiang Rai, Thailand

Since 2020

Anaerobic Washed

Caturra, Chiang Mai, Typica

Omni Roast

This microlot comes from one of Chiang Rai’s prettiest and most fertile valleys, aptly known as the ‘pink valley’ due to the beautiful cherry & stone fruit blossoms on full display during harvest. This picturesque & remote part of northern Thailand is home to the Merlaeku family, a long-time coffee-farming family who belong to the Akha minority group.

The Merlaeku family have been growing coffee for generations, however, they began producing specialty coffee back in 2014 and were one of the first groups in Thailand to do so. Old Quarter has been featuring their amazing micro lots since 2020.

This coffee has a delicious fruit-like acidity that reminds us of red apple & grape mixed with a sugary sweetness and a lingering finish like sweet cocoa.

This fully washed coffee was carefully produced using a two-stage fermentation process with 3 varieties (Caturra, Typica & Chiang Mai) selected from the second oldest brother, Asor’s farm.

We love it as: Pour Over (Black) or Espresso (Black).

Also good as: Plunger or Batch Brew (61g/Litre). Enjoy!

EK43 Espresso brew guide:

Time: 24-26 Seconds

In the remote & mountainous far reaches of Chiang Rai, the Merlaeku family grow a mix of heirloom coffee varieties, mainly Typica and Bourbon, as well as Yellow Caturra, Catuai and some Chiang Mai 80 & Catimor variants. The soil here is super deep, red and fertile. Shade is provided by a mix of fruit & forest trees that include beautiful pink cherry and stone fruit with blossoms that light up the valley.

In terms of processing, whole ripe cherries were rinsed and then placed in anaerobic (oxygen-free) bags for 5 days. The cherries were then pulped and fermented for another day in water. Finally, the coffee was washed in clean spring water and then sundried on raised beds.

The Merlaeku family have been working alongside local legends 'Beanspire' for the better part of a decade to produce a variety of consistently high-quality lots including some of Thailand's first specialty coffee. Over the years we’ve been lucky enough to be the only Aussie company to import their coffee.

The coffee from this region is still widely unknown outside of Thailand. In the past, their coffee was sent to bigger coffee-producing and processing regions like Doi Chaang and Doi Pangkhon and had been marketed under the names of those larger, more famous villages. It is important that we recognize the efforts of coffee farmers in this region by giving them the recognition they deserve. We tip our cap to the Merlaeku family.

I've enjoyed the Baristas Choice Coffee Subscription in Melbourne during 2021 - OQCM's coffee is first rate, the variety is interesting & unique, the business model; inspiring. Subscription service was above & beyond - Amelia went out of her way to provide excellent, friendly customer service. 10/10 would recommend!” Tiffany Smith - Google
”I've been buying this coffee for 2 years now and it's honestly the best coffee I've had so far. The Vietnam K'Ho is definitely my fave but all their coffees are bloody delicious. I was a little late placing my orders sometimes so now I order through their subscription service which is super convenient, plus saves me paying for shipping! 10/10 recommend to anyone who loves coffee.” Beatrice Eichler - Google
OMG if you haven’t tried this coffee yet you need too. How refreshing is it to drink coffee that hasn’t been over roasted and you can taste all the individual flavours of each bean? I’m hooked. Knowing it’s ethically sourced makes it taste even better.
